The Story

This Jean Paul Gaultier AW1998 mesh top captures one of the collection’s defining ideas by placing ornate cathedral interiors and religious imagery onto a sheer second skin. The contrast is intentional. The body is partially revealed beneath imagery traditionally associated with modesty and worship, creating a tension between the sacred and the sensual. Flowing across the print are the collection’s now iconic blood drips, one of Gaultier’s most recognizable motifs. This delicate nylon body is finished with ribbed wool sleeve cuffs and a matching turtleneck, making it a more substantial Fall/Winter version of Gaultier’s signature mesh pieces. The added knit details give the garment a heavier feel while preserving the illusion that the cathedral artwork is wrapped directly around the wearer.
