The Story
Takahiro Miyashita only released one Number (N)ine collection in 2003. A health problem kept him from designing at the usual pace, so spring and fall became a single season. He named it after Mudhoney’s 1988 Sub Pop single “Touch Me I’m Sick.” The season after this, he took the label to Paris. The collection came straight out of Kurt Cobain’s closet. Miyashita remade pieces Cobain actually wore: the red and black striped mohair sweater, velvet-patched denim, blue mohair cardigans, heart-print pajama shirts and the white oval sunglasses. He also brought in Charles Peterson, the photographer behind most of the Sub Pop-era grunge photos, for the graphics. Today the season is best known for its grunge knits, and this is the rarest version. There’s a button-up cardigan in the same knit, but the robe is the one that walked the runway.
